If touchscreen typing isn’t for your style, then here’s the smartphone for you!
A very capable phone in its own right, and will definitely please users who are looking for a capable smartphone that is easy to use.
With that said, after holding the BlackBerry Storm and the Apple iPhone, the G1 feels like it is made of a cheaper material. It doesn’t feel as solid as the other two, but as one of the top three contenders for most popular smartphone, it’s gotta have something going for it right?
Absolutely. The user interface is very friendly, which means that it’s pretty easy to get used to. It’s not only user friendly, but having a full classic QWERTY keyboard that is NOT a touchscreen may be a very welcome relief to some. That means a very short learning curve and minimal beginner frustration when it comes to learning how to use your new keyboard.
Here’s the breakdown:
Pros:
The slide out keyboard portion feels extremely sturdy. It does have an Android Market which rivals the iPhone's App store, and is also a fairly light phone. The web browsing is amazing. Once you get used to the keyboard, surfing the web feels a lot like being on an actual laptop, if not a much smaller one.
Cons:
There is no virtual keyboard on there. Your method for communiqué is in the form of a classic button type QWERTY keyboard (though this is only a con for those who prefer the touchscreen keyboards). It’s not the most comfortable layout, but it gets the job done and is not hard to get used to. If you’re an avid text-a-holic, the G1 can also sometimes mean opening and closing the keyboard multiple times. Programs and applications don't run as smoothly, and the battery life is horrible. So plan to keep your charger or a spare battery handy.
Overall:
The T-Mobile G1 is a GREAT phone for people who do everything online. It goes through the battery rather quickly, but it’s easy to read and surf the web. If you’re paying bills, doing research, or just browsing the web for fun, this phone is amazing. It mixes an interface of a touch screen, with an actual keyboard. The phone is targeted at heavy web users. Although there is an app store where most of the apps are free, the android platform isn't as widespread as Apple's app store is. The G1 does extremely well with the web, but that's about it.
When they release more apps, it will definitely allow the G1 to show off some more of it’s capabilities. The phone does have a key board when the screen slides out to the side, rotating the display into a landscape view. The keyboard was a great add-on, but also a design flaw. The phone has numerous capabilities, but unfortunately the keyboard causes the phone to be a little bit more bulky than your average phone. The phone is amazing for people who are geared towards web browsing, but browsers, be ready to live with your charger or a couple of spare batteries.
