The Blackberry Storm:
Blackberry’s answer to the iPhone
The once anxiously awaited iPhone killer has been on the market long enough. So...is it RIM's solution to the attack of the iPhone? Unfortunately, as packed as it is with cool technology and snazzy features, the consensus is that it falls short of the current king of smart phones.
Don't get me wrong...I have a BlackBerry storm 9530 as my everyday toy. I personally enjoy my storm...but I can see why it falls short of the iPhone’s tall and dark shadow.
For starters, the lag in the response time needs help. The response time for almost everything takes longer than it should. There's no nice way to say it. There have been a few unofficial os upgrades that have been able to improve that dramatically, but make sure to do your research first. You will be upgrading at your own risk. If you do decide to upgrade, don't forget to backup your settings first.
The .113 os upgrade seems to fix the most problems so far. It speeds up the response time and there seems to be less crashing. It also provides an update for the portrait view keyboard that turns it into a full “QWERTY” keybord. Fans of the BlackBerry Pearl may miss the old style, but classic BlackBerry fans welcome the QWERTY keyboard with open arms.
Another feature that makes the storm stand out is the sure press touchscreen. The whole touchscreen is a large button that "clicks" and gives way like a normal button when you press on it. It really is nifty feature...and I am fond of it...sort of.
I like the confirming "click" of the screen, but sometimes the screen can slide a little bit under pressure and you don't always end up hitting the button you meant to. Either way, it takes a little getting used to. You’ll either love it or hate it.
A popular feature that is absent in the storm, is a wi-fi connection. Anyone looking to surf the web on their phone will have to pay for the data connection. It is rumored to be in the next version of the storm though.
Overall, with features like:
- gps,
- a full touchscreen,
- MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint editors,
- media player,
- 3.2 megapixel camera with flash,
- microsd compatibility,
- loads of apps and themes to download,
- all of the classic email features that make a BlackBerry a BlackBerry…
…this phone doesn’t disappoint. It does provide a versatile multimedia experience. It’s a load of fun to use, and you can realisticlly do a lot of work on the go, it’s just not as user friendly as the iPhone.
Verdict: If you don’t mind a smartphone that’s a little on the complex side, then Verizon users and unlocked storm users should find it to be a great device. If not then you should probably just get an iPhone.
The T-Mobile G1 is a GREAT phone for people who do everything online. Paying bills, doing research, or just browsing the web for fun; this phone is amazing. It mixes an interface of a touch screen, with an actual keyboard.

The iPhone is definitely the first ever combination music player, web browser, and phone that actually delivers. There have been many combinations prior, but this is the first phone that mixes all three into one brilliant device.
